Modification of nanocellulose films in deep eutectic solvents using vinyl esters

Abstract The hydrophilicity of nanocellulose materials mitigates their good mechanical and oxygen barrier properties when exposed to humid conditions. It also limits use in many applications where water is present. This study reveals hydrophobic modification cellulose nanofiber (CNF) films with vinyl esters variable alkyl chain length using deep eutectic solvent (DES) imidazole triethylmethylammonium chloride as a reaction medium. Additionally, the influence ultraviolet-ozone (UV/O 3 ) pretreatment on CNF film DES was addressed. esterification proven be simple fast approach increase hydrophobicity (increasing contact angle from 38° 107°), requiring only 15 min time temperature 80 °C. Moreover, improved vapor resulted at wet state, especially treated UV ozone before modification.
